I read them mostly for escape, and a historical era feels much futher away from my own life. I don't want to read about modern-day concerns, for they are too much like my and my friend's own concerns. Well, I took home every free book that was offered to me (in the goody bag, at the lunches, etc.) except for an excerpt/promo thing (because I didn't think I could donate it anywhere afterwards).
