A very belated birthday post

Dear Diary, my name is Dayle and this is what I did for my 47th birthday…

I’d originally wanted to go to Catalina Island for my birthday,* because you get to go free on your birthday. But my birthday actually fell on a Saturday this year, and I’d rather go during the week, and, perhaps most importantly, my birthday again fell on the same day as a nearby SCA event, King’s Hunt. So I decided Catalina could wait.

The event was near Solvang, a pretty little Danish village, so I thought it would be lovely to make a weekend of it. We headed up Friday afternoon, stopping in Santa Barbara to have a random dinner at a Thai restaurant, then continued on and checked in to the Solvang Gardens. Because they have English gardens, and are eco-friendly, and all the rooms are a little different. I didn’t get pics of our room, which was small but very pretty. We booked late so we didn’t have a room overlooking the gardens, but that was okay.

The next morning we had breakfast at this little hole-in-the-wall place in Buellton that had the best corned beef hash I have ever tasted. When I told them that, they told me about how they marinate the beef for three weeks, etc. Holy bejeesus, it was good. Once a month they do locavore dinners, and I so want to go!

King’s Hunt and my birthday have shared the day before, and last time, I brought cake. Cake, I learned, was not the best plan, as it was a hot day and the fighters didn’t want sugar in the middle of fighting, etc. Cake Fail. So this time, I thought it through, and splurged on an enormous Edible Arrangement of fruit on a stick. Success! I wandered around the event and walked up to people (whether I knew them or not) and said “It’s my birthday! Have fruit!” I ran out of fruit before I accosted everybody, sadly.

One friend had brought champagne! for me, but she had only a little and Ken had only a little and Morgana doesn’t drink, and about a third of the way into the bottle I realized if I didn’t find someone else to share this, I was going to spend the rest of the event snoozing on the dayshade floor, so I set off across the field to where Albra was merchanting, because Albra has plied me with champagne on many occasion. I lounged on the daybed in the back of her merchant booth and got whapped in the head with the back wall because it was very very windy and we polished off that bottle, mmm yes we did!

We spent the rest of the afternoon in our friends Rod and Collette’s pavilion, because, as I mentioned, it was very very windy and the dayshade was threatening to become the farmhouse from The Wizard of Oz, despite being staked down. After that, we bundled Morgana and Brian into the car and drove back to Solvang, and went out to dinner at a nice Italian restaurant. We drove them back to the event site and then curled up in our room for a movie and snuggling.

Now, here’s the thing. Solvang is smack in the middle of wine country. It’s surrounded by vineyards. What I wanted to do on Sunday, however, just goes to show what type of person I am.

Vineyards? Feh. Let’s go visit us some miniature donkeys, baybee!

Okay, first we meandered through Solvang in search of breakfast. Our intended destination was packed, so we backtracked to a little place in the center of town and ate in the courtyard. I had an omelette with lobster and Havarti and avocado, OMG, and tried to take pictures of a little bird I was feeding toast to.

We went back to the hotel (by way of the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and at least one thrift shop as well as a hat shop because Ken needs some kind of bowler but they didn’t have the right style) and lounged in the gardens for a bit. The breeze was soft, the sky was blue, the trees whispered. Mmmm.

And then we went in search of miniature donkeys.

I’d been tempted by the ostrich farm, but I’ve been to an ostrich farm in South Africa and I was a little tired so I had to triage my animal visitations that day. The miniature donkey farm has a petting zoo of rescue animals (as well as miniature donkeys): chicken, rabbits, a giant tortoise, goats, turkeys, etc.

(It was hard to get a good photo because the wee beastie kept moving around…)

And they had a zonkey. I didn’t know until I read the brochure at the hotel that such a beast even existed. It’s a cross between a zebra and a donkey. It was unimpressed by our presence and attempts to take pictures. Did I mention its name is Zeeyore?

After that, we went to a miniature horse farm, but it was hot and the miniature horses were even less unimpressed by our presence than the zonkey was, and we weren’t allowed to pet them. I did discover that miniature horses are frighteningly well endowed. There. I said it. Move on.

We had a lovely drive home; instead of sitting in traffic on the 101, we cut through Ojai (sadly, we were too late for the Ojai Raptor Center’s Open House, although I’d already resigned myself to that fact), and then stopped for Indian food in Ventura before making our way home.

It was a perfectly lovely way to spend my birthday weekend.

---

*If possible, I like to have adventures on my birthday. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I love the loot, but the memories are what make things truly special. In the past, I’ve gone to the LA Zoo, played with meerkats, hung out in a tiny bar to watch Styx’s drummer play, stayed on the Queen Mary, gotten a tattoo, held 80s flashback parties…

What I really want

So, my birthday’s coming up, and I meant to post this earlier, but hopefully there’s still time.

I don’t need presents, really. I’ve got Stuff. If you’ve already gone to my wish list and bought me Stuff, then thank you in advance! But if you haven’t, may I make a couple of wee suggestions?

1. What I want, what I really want, is this: If you’ve read something of mine and enjoyed it, post a review. Give it stars, however many you think it deserves. (If you hated it, I’d rather you didn’t post a review, but that’s up to you!) Post it at the site where you bought it, or post it on your blog, or poke one of your friends until s/he buys it. Yes, I’m asking you to promo my work. It’s my birthday, and that’s my wish.

2. If you’ve got the cash, buy something of mine as a gift for a friend. Would So-and-So really love A Little Night Music? Did Whosiwhatsit just get a Kindle or Nook and is looking for some fun reads?

3. Also, and only if you’ve got the cash, I’m missing copies of some of my own work. I try to have at least two copies: one for my shelves and one in a safe location away from my house in case of catastrophe. (Yes, I know an author who’s house burned down, years ago, and he still hasn’t managed to get his hands on a copy of everything he’s published in.)

Here’s a list of everything I don’t have a second copy of:

Used books are fine as long as they're "like new" or otherwise in great shape.

If possible, buying them via my Amazon store gives me a wee little kickback and takes no more time for you (because I've included links—just clickety-click!). However, if you have a strong preference for another store, that's totally groovy, too.

If I get a lot of one particular title, I'll put some aside for giveaways and prizes. (I do plan to do some of those soon, too!)

Thanks, and have a safe and happy day on my birthday!

A good life

Oh, so much goodness over the past few days!

Monday night was my birthday dinner. Not only were there wonderful people there (including Lareej, who was working a show that night and couldn’t stay, but drove all the way from Ventura to give me a hug and sit for a few minutes before dashing back), but there was suuuushi and, as I posted earlier, a dessert made out of Stitch’s head.

And there were prezzies, like an acorn teapot (thank you, Tomi!) and a Wendy Froud book and chocolate/rose love potion scrub (thank you, Morgana and Brian!) and booze (thank you, Mattea and Robey and Albra!), and handmade cards (thank you, Egan!) and a writing book (thank you, Erica!).

The next day, Ken and I went to the LA Zoo, which I’d never been to before. People, it is huge. Enormous. I had no idea. My back was killing me by the end of the afternoon! (It was uphill both ways, don’t’cha know.) But oh, there were otters and birds of prey (Russian eagles!) and tigers and lions and ocelots and jaguars and…! Although, despite what the map said, there were no slow lorises. They’re doing a lot of construction there right now and some of the displays have been moved around, so it’s possible the slow lorises are on hiatus….

I pondered and pondered what kind of food I wanted for dinner, since traffic was going to be horrible and we figured it would be best to top somewhere on our way home. Finally I decided Greek, and my handy dandy iPhone map program found me a great little Mediterranean place, and lo, it was good.

The only minor thing that marred my birthday is that Styx’s website has been revamped and even though I’m still a Lounge member, I didn’t get my annual birthday e-mail from the boys. It always made me squee quietly. Oh, I knew full well it was automated and the band had no knowledge of it, but a girl can always fantasize. I have a very rich fantasy life (for which they pay me, I might point out).

Wednesday and Thursday were mostly work days. I’ve been steadily productive, getting a work e-mail account set up, getting the rest of my books into my Amazon store (if you buy my work directly from there, I get a teeny tiny amount of money), that sort of thing.

On Friday Ken dropped me off at Borders in Thousand Oaks so I could meet up with Christine! whom I hadn’t seen in six months! for a writing day. Well, it was mostly a catching-up day for us, but that’s okay, too. We talked life and writing and more writing and plans (we want to jointly apply to Soapstone) and all manner of things. And she, bless her, brought me Yule and birthday presents (I had for her only a birthday present): a plaque, a pair of earrings of hers that I’d coveted and she says she never wears (copper crescent moons with silver spirals) and a tea infuser and a mug with a tea infuser insert.

The latter made me decide that my afternoon tea each day should be something interesting and different. I’ll do PG Tips for breakfast, but I’m going to really enjoy and savor my afternoon tea. I have loose leaf teas and white teas and who knows what else, and I want to be drinking them! Today I had Glengettie.

Anyway, after lunch Christine had to leave, and I hung out at Borders for another couple hours, working. I pitched some editing ideas (phone confab on Wednesday! fingers crossed!), submitted some reprints to audio and/or online markets, read the first three chapters of Heat Wave (the Castle book. Okay, that wasn’t exactly “working”…!), and started re-reading Out of the Frying Pan because Teresa and I have to get that back out, and the delay is entirely on my lap right now. Time to pull my weight.

Eventually I pinged Ken and he came to get me. He’d dropped me off because he needed the car to help Morgana’s mother move stuff from her house to her new apartment, because he is The Awesome. Upon realizing that we hadn’t, in fact, remembered to shop for food and had, in fact, eaten all our leftovers, we made salad and ordered a pizza. Damn Pizza Hut’s $10 Any Pizza deal! But I ate only two slices while we curled up and watched TV.

Oh, and waiting for me at home were two exciting things! The brand-new Return of the Strange Animal remastered CD/DVD package arrived in the mail! Mmmm, vintage Gowan goodness! And my birthday present from Ken (which had been delayed in the mail): the Castle book! I howled when I saw it.

So, this morning I checked e-mail and discovered our friend Lev from Portland was going to be performing with his Morris side (team) at Heritage Square, just a few blocks away. (I knew he was going to be in town for a Morris Ale, but hadn’t gotten the local performance detail until just then!) So we took a jaunt over there, enjoyed the performances, and on the way back wandered through the park, where they were having an Earth Day celebration. Picked up a map of bike trails in the area, yay!

I’d thrown in the fixings for potato leek soup into the slow cooker this morning, and the house smelled so good today. Over a week ago at the farmer’s market, I’d bought leeks on a whim, with the idea that we’d learn how to cook something new. After perusing various recipe sites online, it became clear to us that leeks are mostly good for potato leek soup. Live and learn! So we had sandwiches and soup for supper, and the soup was as good as it smelled. Definitely a keeper.

Meanwhile, Ken crawled around under the house looking at wiring, because he’s figured out how to make our fabby office-sized laser printer (aka The Behemouth) work here. It runs on 240 (British) power (wattage? I have no idea) as opposed to American 120 power, and I just typed up a long explanation that nobody would be interested in, so suffice to say he can run a cord under the house and the printer will work in my study downstairs, meaning we’ll be able to print double-sided and 11x17 and all that groovy stuff that makes geeks like us salivate. It’s especially good because I have a bunch of novel partials to get in the mail. Soon…! I didn’t marry Ken for his engineering degree, but damned if he doesn’t impress me on a regular basis. :-)

Tonight we went out to see Alice in Wonderland with Morgana and Brian, and then the two of us dashed off to the cheap theatre to see the only—and very late—showing of Sherlock Holmes, both of which I really wanted to see on the big screen, and both of which I adored, although for different reasons. (Alice for the visuals and the actors; SH for the plotting, the setting/costuming, and Robert Downey Jr.; and both for the humor.)

And now it is well past time for sleep…

Birthday treat!

Dayle B-day 2010

What the sushi restaurant brought me for dessert. It looks like Stitch from Lilo & Stitch! Plus plum and green tea ice cream, and mochi!

Birthday week!

Friday, I was productive and accomplished the following:
  • added more books into my Amazon store. This is going to take a while—there are a lot of them… I did all the fantasy and Andrea Dale stories; I still have Sophie Mouette and Sarah Dale to add. I’m changing all the links on my website bibliography, which is why it takes a bit longer.
  • filed the serial numbers off an unsold WFH story for a possible submission to the Music for Another World anthology, and sent it to a couple of first readers to see if it still hangs together.
  • ran errands: dry cleaner, pharmacy, grocery.
  • dealt with more Kingdom Chronicler stuff.
  • laundered, but didn’t yet put away, my thrift store purchases.
Saturday, we were at King’s Hunt, and it was windy and chilly but lovely to hang out with friends old and new.

Sunday, we tidied the sewing room, I did some hand work (made a finger-crochet cord for one of Ken’s shirts, and tacked down some hooks-and-eyes) and dealt with some e-mail, and we curled up and caught up on lots of TV. Mmm, nice mellow day.

Today, my goals are thus:

Writing
  • write Cleis editing proposal and mail.
  • write library essay.
  • apply for more freelance jobs.
  • start Waking the Witch print submissions.
SCA
  • catch up on all Kingdom Chronicler correspondence.
Other
  • continue cleaning off desk.
  • do more laundry. Argh.
  • put away all clothes.
  • other e-mail. Would be nice to clean out my In Box, really.
  • maybe some sewing? I bought tablecloths to turn into kitchen curtains as well as dish towels—or there may even be enough for a table runner—and I’d love to start working on that! But I suspect there won’t be time.
Plus, it’s my birthday dinner tonight!* Hurrah—birthday sushi! (I actually dreamed about sushi last night; guess I’m excited! Even if I’d’ve preferred to go to Cho Cho San rather than Genmai. Both have non-sushi options for the non-sushi/non-fish eaters, but Genmai was closer for most folks, and I’m all about making my birthday celebration amenable to as many of my friends as possible!)

---
*For those not in the know, my actual birthday is tomorrow—but tomorrow night is Textile Guild, and I didn't want to conflict with that. Because, again, I want to make my celebration as enjoyable and easy for the maximim number of friends!

We <3 Alison Tyler

Editor and author Alison Tyler is being coy as usual. She’ll admit that June is her birthday month, and that she likes to celebrate all month, but she won’t admit which day is her actual birthday.

She ducks her head, hiding behind a fall of dark hair. She says she’s shy while she reveals intimate details of her life. She won’t let us see her face, but she’ll show us her shoes, her little skirts, her panties (okay, maybe not always in pictures, but she paints pictures with words, and how can we help but fill in the rest with our imaginations?).

She writes, she edits, she drinks coffee in the morning and tequila at night (or is it the other way around), and all the while she reminds us how much you can confess while at the same time divulging just enough to tease.

Because you know what teases get? A spanking. Spankings: They’re not just for birthdays anymore.

We’ve declared today to be her birthday, whether or not it actually is, because, well, we wanted to throw her a party. Any excuse to party, right? If you follow the link above, you'll get links to everyone else who's staggering around with glasses of champagne and party horns, wrapped in streamers and smeared with frosting.

So, Happy Birthday Alison! I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow at the Erotic LA expo, imagining you’re there with me, saying, “Oh, I have this toy, and this one, and this one, and ooh, this one’s great, too, and…!”

Birthday, Part III

Sunday

Meerkat day! Meerkat day! Squee!

My present that morning was another in the Audubon birds of prey series: a California condor! (Actually, it’s a special edition bird, not part of the birds of prey series. Details…)

Morgana and Brian arrived and we all poured our underslept bodies into the car and headed east into the desert. We had lunch at a Ruby’s Diner because it was close and reasonable, not because of any great desire to eat at a Ruby’s Diner. My bleu cheese burger had some icky bits in it, I’m sad to say, but the fries I stole off Morgana’s plate were yummy. Then we killed a few minutes at Hadley Orchards where, it turns out, Morgana and Brian had their first date. (They had date shakes.)

On the way to the meerkat sanctuary, Morgana and I practiced our inner squees, as we assumed it would bad to vocalize them and startle the meerkats. Essentially, we did some out-loud squees to try and get them out of our system.

And then we were there! We were met by Pam Bennett-Wallberg, Director of Fellow Earthings Wildlife Center, who immediately said I looked like Stockard Channing, which I took as a huge compliment. She proceeded to tell us a funny story about Stockard, who’s the new narrator of Meerkat Manor and who’d come to the sanctuary to meet the meerkats and managed to get her rented Porsche stuck… Heh.

Now, you have to realize, I’d been waiting for this for a year. The deal is, you donate $100 to the center, and as a perk of membership, you and up to three other people get to spend 2 hours with the meerkats. What I didn’t realize when I tried to schedule this for my birthday last year was that there was a 6–12 month waiting list. So I scheduled it for this year’s birthday. I tried not to jitter and show too much impatience as Pam showed us around the facility, made us signed release forms, etc. :-)

There were three enclosures, two with two meerkats and one with three. Meerkats can be very territorial, apparently. To pick them up, all you had to do was offer them food…in the form of live, wriggling mealworms. Thank gods we didn’t have to handle live bugs! Morgana and I wouldn’t have been able to do it.

Pam also praised Morgana and I for not shrieking in high-pitched voices over the meerkats, which means our practice ahead of time had been a wise thing. She also was impressed that Morgana didn’t leap and scream when a couple of the meerkats “fought” for worms in her lap. Morgana laughed and pointed out that she had experience with crazed cats. A couple of little meerkats snarling adorable little meerkat snarls wasn’t going to bother her!

Anyway, Pam thought we were the coolest people ever, which was fun. She wanted to know all about the SCA and costuming and history, and my writing, and the fact that Ken and I had been to Africa, and the other animals we’d made a point of seeing (cheetahs, birds of prey, wolves, etc.), and kept commenting on how interesting we all were. She had us talking so much, we really didn’t get to hear all of her stories about Africa. She did talk about a book she’d written and a documentary she’d considered doing.

The meerkats, though. Head. Asplode. With Cuteness. They were…I’m going to do a crap job of describing it because they were just so freaking adorable. First up were Remi (F) and Suri (M) (no related to TomKat’s daughter). One of them wasn’t much for being held, but the other was. None of them specifically came over to be held or picked up, per se, but most of them were fine with being scooped up while they snorfled your other hand for tasty wriggly mealworms. We sat on low benches with our legs out, and held our hands by our ankles, and the one who liked to come up would run up our legs as we drew our hands up.

Next up was Kendi (F) and Rafiki (M). One of them wanted your hand flat (good for photo ops), whereas for the other, you fisted your hand and he or she would pry at your fingers to get to those yummy wriggling treats you were hiding.

Pam said that because these meerkats don’t have to deal with a lot of the problems live ones do (foraging for food, dodging predators, etc.), they can get bored—so they love having visitors. Plus they were smart, and knew exactly what it meant when we walked towards their enclosures—food! Between eating, they’d run around, scrabble in the dirt (they didn’t go into any full-on burrowing, probably because they knew they might miss out on food if they went too far), sit up on their little comfy chairs and look so cute you couldn’t stand it, scramble across our legs, cuddle with each other…

Our final stop was to meet Jengo (M), Nalo (M), and Bara (F). I swiftly twigged that Bara had clearer markings (not quite spots, but not quite stripes, either) than the other two. Turns out most people don’t even notice that! Go me! She’s from a different part of Africa. So she’s the only one of all of them that I can ID in the pictures. The rest of them have subtle stripes, whereas her colors are more pronounced.

I’m pretty sure it was Nalo who, after he’d eaten his fill, took up residence in the corner of the enclosure next to me. He was sitting up, looking around, checking things out, looking adorable. And I couldn’t help myself. I couldn’t have stopped myself if I wanted to. Very, very slowly and carefully, I stuck out my forefinger. And he booped the end of my finger with his dirty little nose. (They all had dirty little noses! Squee!) So I reached out again, very, very slowly and carefully, and just barely brushed against the hairs on his little belly.

He was fine with that, so I did it again, with a little scritching. And again, and again, my brain dissolving into so much mush as I gave a meerkat belly scritches. He also let me scritch under his chin twice. I nearly died from the adorableness of it. I’m getting all squee-y again just typing this!

I managed to get one picture of myself doing this, and Ken got videos. In my picture his nictating membranes are over his eyes, so he looks like a little zombie meerkat. (Zombie meerkats! Squee!)

Eventually we had to go, after petting the dogs and the cat and thanking Pam profusely. What an amazing experience. Totally worth the wait! I’m so glad that I try to do something for my birthday when I can.

We stopped at The Old Spaghetti Factory on the way home, because nothing was going to make my birthday complete better than angel hair pasta with mizithra cheese and browned butter. (Well. There are a couple of other things. But Styx didn’t actually have a show this weekend.)

And then we came home, and slept for a long, long time.

Monday

Pretty much all I remember of Monday is finding a copy of Charles de Lint’s Tapping the Dream Tree as my next present. Oh, and when we ordered pizza that night, because it was my actual birthday, I got a stuffed-crust pepperoni-lover’s with onions and extra cheese. Urp.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled journal. At least 'til I get my write-up of the Ren Faire finished...

Birthday, Part II

Saturday

This morning’s present was a DVD of Grosse Point Blank, one of my favorite movies. I can’t believe I didn’t own it already!

We had a quick breakfast, then did the Queen Mary’s Ghosts and Legends Tour, the tickets for which were part of our package deal. (We also got tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific, the LA Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and an LA Galaxy soccer game, plus a coffee table book about the Queen Mary, a 50% off coupon to a Best Western in San Diego, and a signed photo of a Radio Disney DJ. Sweet deal!) The tour was a production with special effects rather than an actual tour of the haunted areas of the ship, so it was expectedly cheesy, but it was still fun. Since most of it was low-lit and I have abysmal night vision, I probably missed a few things.

At one point, they told us about a crewman who was playing chicken back and forth between an automatic door and got cut in half. I turned to Ken and, sotto voce, asked, “Does that mean he haunts two rooms at the same time?” Hee.

After that, we went across the way to the Aquarium of the Pacific, because, you know, they have otters! They have moon jellies and crystal jellies and weedy sea dragons and leafy sea dragons and otters! We managed to hit the otter feeding time and I just about asploded from the cuteness. (I want to do their behind-the-scenes otter experience next year, which includes feeding the otters.)

Lots and lots of squee, but I also got tired (stupid cold) and had to sit for a bit. The Aquarium of the Pacific has astonishingly uncomfortable benches that don’t seem to have been constructed for human beings. If you try to lean back, you pretty much sliiiiide right off them. Since it was a Saturday, the place was swarming, although we were highly amused by the barely walking toddler wearing an AC/DC t-shirt.

Full of oceanic goodness, we made our way back to Manhattan Beach (with me being geeky and taking pictures of the Goodyear blimp on the way) and met up with a bunch of our Styxfan peeps for a birthday dinner of sorts: Nanci, Lenny, Monk, Cindi, Sheri, Karin, Fran, and Thom. Nanci, Lenny, and Monk brought me presents even though they weren’t supposed to, and others brought cards, and I was just happy to spend time with my friends.

I’d randomly picked a restaurant using the powers of the GPS on my iPhone, and although the deli was small, the portions were big and mouthwatering. I had a roast beef and brie panini (nomnomnom), Ken had a big salad (he let me steal his goat cheese), and we split some seasoned fries with a cajun mayo type dipping sauce. Then the waitress brought me birthday dessert! Some kind of cookie/brownie thing drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauces and topped with whipped cream. I forced everybody to eat some, because I was already stuffed. But it was goooood.

Then it was back down the street for another night at Pancho’s, where we met Louis and Angela. Tyla and her mom and brother showed up for a short time as did Tani and Johnny, and Maria joined us, too. Ken and I split up and sat at different tables for different views, which confused Taylor (who ended up sitting at Ken’s table). Between the second and third sets, Ken brought in ginormous cupcakes from Costco, which I attempted to foist off on all my friends, and then on any drunk person I could make eye contact with. When they asked what the occasion was and I said my birthday, many strangers felt it was then appropriate to wish me a happy birthday and hug me. I’d had several glasses of wine, so I had no problem with that.

(Sheri got a great photo of me and cupcakes, but I can't figure out how to link to it on her Facebook page. Grr.)

The band once again rocked, and Taylor’s guest vocals on two songs were gorgeous, and Jimmy, the lead singer, announced it was my and another patron’s birthday, although almost nobody heard him. Ken got his timpani mallets signed, which was very cool.

At one point late in the evening, I’d turned to say something to Nanci, and suddenly there was a Todd drumstick wedged in the crook of my elbow. Apparently it had slipped out of his hand, because others saw him turn and look at Koko and laugh. All I knew was that I’d gotten a birthday drumstick! Whee!

We headed home after that, arriving at 3 a.m., and got about four hours’ sleep because we had to get up bright and early the next day for…

Birthday, Part I

So, my birthday weekend. A quick note before I start: Click on any of the pictures in these entries and you’ll be taken to the full set on my Flickr site.

Now, on to the festivities!

Friday

Since we were spreading my birthday over several days, Ken spread my presents over several days. Friday morning I awoke to a promo photo of Lawrence circa 1985 (Strange Animal era)—rock that mullet!

We went down the coast (gorgeous, with the sun sparkling on the water, but no dolphins—did they not get the memo that it was my birthday weekend?) to Santa Monica. I’d had a light tea at The Tudor House before, and I’m happy to say that their full afternoon tea was also excellent: finger sandwiches (natch), salad, scones with proper Devon cream (heaven!) and jam, and petit fours. We opted for a Yorkshire tea blend that was just lovely.

We took a picture in front of the British mailbox in the store, but you can’t see it…

We also browsed in the store, but didn’t buy anything—I like to patronize our local British shop in Ventura whenever I can.

After that, we strolled around Santa Monica hand-in-hand in the sunshine. We needed new cover screens for our iPhones, so we went to the Apple store, where the Most! Enthusiastic! Employee! Ever! checked us out. (He high-fived me when I said it was my birthday weekend.)

We hit some traffic heading further south, but got to the Queen Mary with no problem. I’d been on her once before, about four and a half years ago, for a cocktail party, so I hadn’t really seen much of her. Our room was surprisingly spacious, and they did a great job upgrading while keeping most of the Art Deco décor. Can’t say I was impressed by the obviously modern bedspread and curtains, though—not only were they completely and utterly wrong, they clashed with each other.

For example, they kept the original bathtub knobs, which include options for hot and cold sea water. Sadly, they no longer work. Why would someone want to bathe in hot sea water? Wouldn’t one just then be sticky?

After a shower and fluff-and-buff, we were back on the road to Pancho’s, where Styx’s drummer Todd Sucherman would be playing with local band Day After Daze. We met up with Sheri, Karin, Nanci, Lenny, Monk (Nanci and Lenny’s child, a little stuffed monkey), Cindi, Todd, and Angie, and later Fran and Thom. (I’m terrified that I’m forgetting someone…) We ate yummy Mexican food in the bar (I had a shrimp and crab quesadilla) while waiting (and waiting, and waiting…) for the band. (We got there early to get tables up front, but the band didn’t go on ‘til 10 p.m.)

Between sets I had the chance to say hello to Taylor Mills, Todd’s wife, and get her CD signed. Alas, although I took a picture of her and Sheri with Sheri’s camera, I didn’t get a picture of Taylor and myself! Next time…. She’s a sweetheart and we had a great time chatting.

Amusingly, when I popped on to Facebook to update my status, I saw that my newest “friend” was The Fabulous Koko Powell, Day After Daze’s bassist! I told him that later and he high-fived me. (It was a high-five kind of weekend.)

The band finished up around 2 a.m. and we scooted back to the Queen Mary and crashed hard, because we had a busy day ahead of us…

My birthday weekend, in one picture

The plan is to get all the pictures uploaded to Flickr today and do a full write-up of my Most Incredible Birthday Weekend, but for now, here's a teaser:

Sah-weet!

I’ve been thinking ahead to my birthday weekend. Todd Sucherman of Styx is playing with his usual bar band in Huntington Beach on Friday and Saturday nights, so I thought it would be fun to get a nice hotel or B&B in the area and stay Friday night, then go to the Aquarium of the Pacific and have tea at The Tudor House. But at the same time, we’re paying attention to money so I didn’t want to go overboard on the hotel stay.

I just discovered The Queen Mary is having a special deal that includes a room, tickets to their Ghosts and Legends show (The Queen Mary is massively haunted), reduced-price tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific, tickets to the LA Zoo, tickets to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, a discount coupon book for San Diego hotels, and more.

Score! *\o/*

We’ll head home Saturday night, of course, because Sunday we grab Morgana and Brian and go to see meerkats! It’s going to be an amazing weekend!

But now, back to work. ::hunkers down::

Endorphins!

Endorphins!

Sorry, I just got my tattoo worked on, so I'm buzzing. (Actually, since it was an hour's drive home, I'm starting to come down, but not entirely.) I finally got the phases of the moon around my right ankle, hanging down like charms from the Celtic knotwork band I had done for my 30th birthday. One of the reasons it took me so long to get them done is I didn't know how I wanted them connected to the band. The tattoo artist (Pat Fish of Lucky Fish Tattoo—she's fabulous!) suggested dots. I was curious to see how that would look, so she drew them on. Ohhhh! She meant gradiated dots, getting bigger as they go down. Perfect! And the spiral she put in the new moon (in the front) is just perfect.

Damn. Now I want more.  ::scurries off to start plotting and planning::

Pictures will be taken and posted once the redness has gone down.

Long day

Well, phooey. The humorous fairy tale story was rejected. The main editor said the setting made my story stand out from the rest and my “opening line was simply awesome.” However, he basically had an issue with the conflict, which is fair enough, but the conflict is original to the fairy tale and I’m not sure how to get around that. OTOH, the other editor said it was in her top three stories and sent me a separate e-mail saying how much she enjoyed it, and that she hopes I’ll submit to their next anthology. So hey, it didn’t fit there, but it’s a really fun story and will be out in the mail to Realms of Fantasy on Monday.

Also a rejection from Spacesuits & Sixguns for “The Queen’s Gardener.” Drat it, people, don’t you know it’s my birthday weekend?! ::gg:: I have to check my spreadsheet to see where I’ll send that story next.

Other than that, I’m just bloody exhausted. Got up, went to the chiropractor, came home, went grocery shopping and other errand-ing with Ken, came home, at lunch, poked at e-mail, went to Costco* with Ken. All before my first cup of tea. Oh, and as we were getting ready to leave for Costco, Ken put on a new pair of shoes he bought yesterday, and they were so slick on the bottom that he fell down the stairs. :-( Banged up his elbow and smacked his back, although he says he doesn’t think there’s any major damage. Scared the crap out of me, though!

The first thing we did on the way to Costco was stop at the sporting goods store and return the shoes.  :-S

A friend e-mailed me privately asking about my tattoo, and I realized I hadn’t rambled about it here yet, so now I shall!

For my 30th birthday I got a Celtic knotwork band around my right ankle. I planned it for two years and while I didn’t design the band per se, I spent a lot of time finding the one I wanted. It has eight connectors, and I always planned to have the phases of the moon hanging down from it like charms…only I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what I wanted the connectors to look like.

I finally decided to go ahead and get the moons done, and decide on the connectors later…but then I needed to find a tattoo artist I was comfortable with. I need someone I trust, someone I click with, because getting work done is not only physical for me, but emotional and spiritual. I’d been looking at Pat Fish’s website for some time, and on our way up to Black Oak Lodge last month, I stopped in and met her, and put down a deposit. (Check out her website—she does amazing Celtic work!)

Almost here...

On Monday, I finally finished and mailed a fantasy short story that I’d been working on for a bit—a humorous take on a fairy tale for an anthology looking for the same. Yesterday I got word that the story’s made the first cut—hoorah!

This also meant that now I can get back to work on Ghosted with my full concentration. Plus Teresa and I have a collab story to write, and she’s already sent me the beginning, but I want to get my head back into the novel before I play with the story. It’s too easy to use stories as an excuse not to work on the novel! And I really do love this novel.

I’ve been spending a little time tweaking my new website, which to you all won’t look appreciably different from my old website, except maybe for the home page. But it’s so much easier to work with (for me to add updates and change things), and I’m excited about it going live soon. My webgoddess has once again done an amazing job!

Today brought a nice present in the mail: a royalty statement from Virgin. Several Wicked Words anthologies have been sold to Germany (including Sex at the Sports Club, which includes the first story Teresa and I wrote for them and which garnered the invitation to write a novel), so I get a percentage of that, plus a bit of royalty money for both novels. With the exchange rate, it’s an even nicer chunk of change—but lest you think I’m suddenly rolling in it, let me say that it’s not enough to cover the Marketing Workshop in May. But it certainly helps.

I also got a birthday card and check from my parents. Whee! Birthdaybirthdaybirthday! April is Happy Birthday Month!

Although I had a big party for my 40th birthday, it was somewhat lost in a haze of pain and painkillers and muscle relaxants (I spent my actual birthday in the ER). Last year’s birthday was deliberately quiet (although hiring the personal trainer was the best present I’ve ever given myself). So this year I’m feeling a bit obnoxious and all about me. :-) Saturday is King’s Hunt, and we’ll be taking a cake for everyone to share. (“Cake or death?” If I ask you, will you understand?) Sunday, my actual birthday, we’re planning on doing a charity bike ride and visiting the big cat sanctuary, and maybe dinner with Morgana & Brian if we’re all not too exhausted. The next day we’ll be right back to reality with a tax appt, and the following day I have my yearly gyn exam (healthy is good!)…
