The story is modern (literary mystery).
"Who are we playing against?" I asked X who, despite having lived here his whole life (and his father is one of the janitors, because name your kid "X" and then kick him while he's down), cares even less about the [football] game than I do.Please leave suggestions here (on the blog) rather than FB/Twitter, so I have 'em all in one place. The person who suggests the name I use gets a free book. :-)

Really? I was that guy!
Ernie
How about Erin, modern Irish spelling of a girls name.
Godfrey
Eugene? Seymour? (I have a fondness for the classics.)
Gilbert, Eugene, Clancy, Clarence, Rupert, Norton, Herman, Alvin, Francis, Stuart, Oswald, Sheldon, Dwayne... I could do this all night. ;) --Jen
Zephyr. Yes this was a friends real name.
Howard.
Jeffery
Almost every Jeffery I've known has been a nerdy type.
(I don't have a google account so I guess I'm anonymous)

I vote for Howard, Francis and Stewart. I knew kids with those names in elementary school -- SERIOUS dwerbs, every one (though Stewart and Howard both turned out to be very handsome by the time they got to college. Never saw red-haired freckly Francis again, so don't know :)
I would say Lewis, though Francis seems it would work well too. (Seymour too...)
Theodore. It means "God's gift." From well-educated by socially inept parents, it would have all sorts of wonderful historical and literary connotations that would resonate for them but give a kid hives. Bestowed by parents who aren't "readers," it could be tied to their growing up loving "Leave It to Beaver" which would still be not-so-cool for modern kids. The associated nicknames of Ted and Theo would still scream GEEK in middle school.
. . . well-educated *but* sociall inept . . . .
I give up on spelling today.
Ernest. Claude. Maurice.
Name it after me you can use my middle name which is Edwin, and I'll make a donation to the CP.
There was a guy I worked with that admitted he went by Bruce (submission #1) because he didn't like his first name, Herbert (submission #2). Somebody's parents were in a mood that day ...
Eugene is my choice. :^)
Robespierre...its a real name!!!
