Ken update: Thanks, hand info, transport

First, Ken would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of support—the blog/FB/Twitter comments, the emails (I hacked into his account), the folks who’ve gone out of their way to stop by. You are all freaking amazing!

Second, for some reason I can’t access the hotel’s internet in Ken’s room. I can get it fine in my “hotel” room, which is on the other end of the complex. I’m going to see if I can get it when I’m in the cafeteria…

Third, can anyone recommend a hand surgeon (either orthopedic or plastic) in the Ventura County area? Ken’s hand needs to be immobilized for about six weeks, then he needs to have the pins taken out and start doing some therapy. He should regain full function of his hand, yay! Oh, and we learned today that the broken bones were in his hand, not his fingers. Broken bones and ruptured tendons…. But again, full use of his hand will happen eventually. And his shoulder socket wasn’t injured (just his scapula) so he’ll be able to use his left hand in the meantime, once his scapula isn’t hurting quite so bad.

Fourth, to answer a popular question: He’ll probably be here in Reno for 3 or so more days. He was signed up for a mediflight service that will transport him to a hospital of our choice in Southern California, and then he’ll be released to go home.

That’s this morning’s update!  :-)

Excellent! Dennis had his hand operated on. I'll check and see who's the best.

(Dennis ran a drill through his hand a few years ago)

Wow. Another flight to California? That's getting deluxe treatment. Bless his heart! I'm really happy he'll be able to use his hand—and I'm still thinking happy thoughts, woman.

Thanks for the update Dayle, great news on the hand and shoulder. Ken being a Lefty is somehow quite appropriate. ;)

Best thought and wishes for you both.

I just found this from the K-bikes website. That's great that Ken is doing better and coming home soon. Hopefully his rehab is quick.

You and Ken will be in our prayers.

Hi Dayle -

Check with George Erb Physical Therapy - they list rehabilitation of the hand and wrist. I'm sure thay can recommend a few good surgeons. They are located next to Pacific Sales in Camarillo.

The big question was how long he would be in Reno? I was wondering how many more minutes it would be until he was back on the LD Rider List! Heal up Ken, we miss hearing from you. ++ Craig Chaddock

So glad to hear he's doing well. Please let us know if there's anything we can do - wanting to help and not being able to is frustrating in the extreme. Do we need to start up a 'pay for a gardener' fund for while you are away? Should I start knitting cast covers? Collecting dot-to-dot pictures for his hand therapy? Or just continue in my Quest to kick Fate in the goolies until it stops picking on my beloveds?

Most excellent news overall. So good to hear they expect he'll regain full use of the hand in time--I was concerned about that, though undoubtedly not as concerned as you and he were. Good to hear he'll be closer to home, at least, soon.

Love and good thoughts from the whole crew and various kitties.

We were so shocked to hear about Ken's aciident. My husband and I met ken at the 2008 Utah 1088 and rode the 2009 IBR with him. He is a good friend and an amazing rider. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Hi Dayle - I don't think we've ever met, but my name is Nancy Oswald, I've done a few rallies with Ken including the 09 and 11 IBR's. I crashed just about the same time as Ken this year! For me, it was sudden flat of my rear tire on the freeway not far from the finish. 6.5 miles to be exact. My thoughts are with Ken and you during this difficult time and I am so glad to hear that he is recovering well. Please let Ken know I am thinking of him often and sending all the positive energy I can his way. Yours too!

I did manage to finish the rally through the generosity of a staff member who rode out to the scene of my accident to lend me his bike. Ken would probably want to know that :-)

I don't know any hand surgeon in CA for you but we have a fantastic one here in Baltimore who put my husband's fingers back together after an accident at work if that helps at all! This one rides an ST1300! Name is Dr. Moore in Baltimore. You would, of course, have a place to stay and use of anything my husband and I can offer.

My husband's accident was about 2 years ago now and not nearly as serious. However, it was a long painful recovery for him and he still has severe pain in the cold. Good thing you live in southern California!

All the best - Nancy Oswald

If Ken ends up at CMH in Ventura, Sunrise Physical Therapy is a shorter drive than going to Camarillo, and they have great folks and great equipment. They're right off Telephone near the 101-126 interchange. I went there for the torn ligaments in my foot and they were really big on giving me at-home work to do, rather than dragging my care out in the office for weeks and weeks. :)

Dayle and Ken,

Very glad to hear Ken is on the mend and will be going home soon. My best wishes to you both.

I'll throw this out there, I had a very good experience with Dr. Raymond Raven in Burbank, CA (LA area) 818-841-3936... but maybe too far for you

best,

Chris Ogden
